Not Guilty Your Honour
Chapter seven
âOn The Huntâ
THE ANDERSONS
Terry Anderson was the eldest of eleven children, he had three sisters and seven brothers, Terry was born in Glasgow in 1935 in one of the most squalid sectors of the city. His Father Terry snr worked as a Docker in the day and as an enforcer for a major Glasgow gang at night. Most nightâs Terry snr would mind back street gambling dens where his job was to make sure no harm came to the staff. Glasgow in them days was like the wild west of America the only difference was that the yanks used guns and the Scots used razors, knifes and coshes. It seemed a night never passed without Terry snr having to cosh someone or another but on one night in the course of doing his job Terry was jumped by six rival gang members where they cut him with razors to within an inch of his life. Terry had two choices, mend and seek revenge or to take up on an offer by a cousin to move his family down to London. It took weeks for Terryâs wounds to heal and like everything else in his life he thought very carefully about his options. The push though finally came in the form of his wife Maggie, sickened by years of violence and endless worrying just to get by, she told her husband that she had had enough of Glasgow, Terry and Maggie had seven children and she feared that if they remain in Scotland they would only be bringing up their children into poverty and violence. So on hot sunny summers day in 1947 the Andersonâs moved to Battersea, South London.
Terry Anderson jnr was a monster of a man, at first glance you could be mistaken into thinking that he was fat but once up close you could see that he was as solid as an ox. He wasnât particularly muscular but just a big boned brute of a man. Over six feet two and seventeen stone with a thick mane of ginger hair, Terry Anderson just oozed menace and danger.
He was a hard drinker, hard gambler,, hard talking, hard bastard, most people who knew him were terrified of him, at best people kept their distance from him. He was a bully, a bully in every sense of the word, anyone who upset him including women came to harm, Terry was known for his temper and stories about the beatings he gave to women and men were legendary around the streets and pubs of south London.
With his gang of friends and seven brothers the Andersonâs absolutely terrorised South West London. It was said that there wasnât a pub, club, or spiel in Battersea, Clapham, Balham, Vauxhall, Fulham and Tooting that wasnât in some shape or form paying protection to the Andersonâs. They owned three scrap metal yards, four car sites, six snooker and billiard halls and countless illegal underground drinking and gambling clubs. Times were good for the Andersonâs, they had money and they had plenty of it and they had a reputation that was fearsome.
